  • 1. What is the story behind the idea of PlacementBee?

    The core team of PlacementBee, including the two founders - Turya and Santu - have been working together for more than 15 years. They have collaborated in the planning and execution of more than 40 large-scale, highly sensitive government recruitments.

    We had to travel across India, sometimes in the remotest of places, for conduct of these examinations and skill assessment exercises. The large number of candidates and diverse locations meant that we had to partner with a large number of colleges for these recruitment drives. In our various interactions with the Principals and administrators of these institutions, a common complaint was that their best students were comparable to the very best of the top colleges but lacked opportunity and exposure. The only option for the good students were to crack government jobs - a miniscule number compared to the number of job seekers in our country.

    In 2021, with no projects, we decided to verify whether this claim was true. We already had a lot of data for various examinations and did a rating of colleges for the top 100 candidates on the combined merit list. To our surprise we found that the students from Group B & C colleges accounted for 63.1% of the top 100 candidates across various recruitments. (The number of Group B & C colleges are much higher than Group A and A+ colleges and this percentage has been calculated for multiple recruitments - from management trainees and engineers to upper division clerks.)

    This led us to think how we may give a platform to these candidates and provide unique benefits to a company.

    Being in the recruitment industry we have first-hand experience of how increasing the reach to find the best talent results in exponential increase of costs. Except for the largest companies, all companies in India have negligible to non-existent personnel department which can help in selection of the right team. Most interviews are taken by job-role seniors who test certain aspect of the candidate's knowledge but otherwise does not have the skill to objectively judge a candidate. This results in a low-level understanding of the candidate's subject knowledge and almost no understanding of suitability to a particular post.

    After a lot of deliberations, planning and fine-tuning, we started the operations of PlacementBee on 1st August 2023. PlacementBee is a unique endeavor which provides complete pre-hire solution for selection from a database of candidates of every discipline and every location. We have the experience of large-scale knowledge and skill assessment and a zero-error examination delivery system along with a large network of coordinators across India which enables us to connect to each and every college and provide them with online campus placement opportunities - currently non-existent.

    To appear for the aptitude test, a candidate has to register on the PlacementBee platform, complete the profile with supporting documents and upload a self-introduction video. Each document is checked and matched with the details entered by the candidate before a profile is approved. Approved candidates who had already appeared for the aptitude test are moved to the section visible to recruiters.

    To the recruiters we present this pre-screened database of candidates from all corners of India and with all available specializations. The recruiters can view the profile of any candidate, self-introduction video and the various metrices from the aptitude test. The PlacementBee platform provides advanced tools for identification and comparison of suitable candidates aiding in the selection of the best match for the post. We also offer customized knowledge/skill evaluation and interview support. We cover all aspects of the pre-hire process while reducing time, cost, large teams and hassle of recruitment.

    The PlacementBee platform serves the recruitment needs of all companies – from the largest to the smallest, service industry or manufacturing industry. From the confines of one’s office, a recruiter can source candidates from all corners of the country. The pre-hire cost is eliminated as candidates are pre-screened. All pre-joining communication, including interview scheduling and online interviews, can be done from this platform. The ratio of successful interviews is massively increased due to the strong screening of candidates. The overheads at all levels of recruitment are significantly reduced and cumulative cost savings amount to more than 80% per hire.

    We understand that large sections of the Indian population are under-privileged but possess an enormous amount of talent. We do not charge any money from either the college or the candidates. The aptitude test, profile creation including video upload is absolutely free for all candidates. We seek the support of the college in conduct of the aptitude test at their premises, an activity in which they are most proficient.

  • Before we list the problems that PlacementBee tries to address, a little background into the present fresher’s recruitment scenario is important.

    Campus recruitments are prohibitively expensive and possible for only the largest companies at few selected top institutions. This is further limited to only candidates studying professional courses. Each cycle of campus recruitment in a top institution diminishes the talent pool available. It is a fact, in a country like India where location and exposure play a major role, that the top students of a Grade B or Grade C colleges are generally better than a mediocre student of a top college. Unfortunately, this talent pool is often not tapped and these students gravitate towards Government jobs. Many of our brilliant civil servants and officers are from non-reputed colleges which had no opportunity for campus placements.

    The common way for medium and small companies for recruitment of fresh graduates is through reference or approaching local recruitment agencies. The pool of candidates that can be achieved through reference is very limited and recruitment becomes an exercise in elimination, rather than selection. The local recruitment agencies source their candidates from established job sites matching the specified criteria given by the company with the resumes uploaded by job seekers. Not even 2% of resumes of freshers contain information important and relevant to that particular recruitment drive. In this age of free designs and content, most resumes of freshers just look the same though their capabilities may be vastly different. In our experience of sourcing candidate profiles through local recruitment agencies, finding one suitable candidate for every 5 interviews is a very good outcome. Often the ratio is much worse. Apart from the service charges of the recruitment agency, this process involves huge resource and manpower overheads. The manpower required for this process ranges from the back-office executive involved in scheduling and communication to top management personnel taking the selection calls for building a winning team.

    In a labor surplus market like India, recruitment remains a tough and expensive activity. India, with its young and aspirational population, possesses an enormous amount of talent. Unfortunately, most of this talent cannot be unearthed due to lack of opportunity, the sheer number of people available for each opening, the limitations of reach and exposure, a non-explorative system of selection based on a few pre-set criteria – among other such factors. For the colleges, budget constraints make it impossible to seek placements for even their best students.

    The problems that PlacementBee is trying to address are three-fold.

    For the recruiters we are providing the world’s largest database of pre-screened candidates. This increases the reach of the company to every corner of India and simplifies the recruitment process for the largest to the smallest recruiter. The recruitment costs are driven down by more than 80% and manpower engagement is hugely reduced.

    For the colleges, we provide them a platform for campus placement which is currently unavailable for more than 95% of the institutions.

    For the candidates, we provide them a platform to showcase their skills, aptitude and uniqueness to an audience of global recruiters. The service provided by PlacementBee is free for colleges and candidates. PlacementBee tries to eliminate the disadvantages of location, exposure and budget to provide a complete meritocratic selection process.

  • PlacementBee is not a Job portal. Job portals are exactly what they claim to be – a portal to post jobs. This concept of Job portals had originated in the USA and has been adapted to the Indian market with very little modification. The onus is on the candidate to choose a particular job, in extension the company offering employment. For maximum freshers in India looking to start their careers, this is a luxury. Most apply to all available openings if the eligibility conditions are met.

    For the small and medium recruiter, the options for reaching a good pool of potential employees are very limited and for the large recruiter, increasing this pool size is prohibitively expensive. The cost of screening candidates is very high and compromise on screening leads to low selection rate in interviews. With the current offerings in the market, the common problems which the recruiters face are – limited reach, inadequate information about a candidate before interview based on the resume provided, high cost of screening and pre-interview communication, manpower engagement during interview scheduling and post interview processes, document collection and other joining activities.

    Though there is a section where jobs can be posted, PlacementBee is essentially a skill and knowledge assessment company. We are on a mission to bring all students across India to a platform where they can avail campus recruitment opportunities. We use our expertise in skill and knowledge assessment to provide the recruiters with metrices that are unavailable currently and expand their reach to all corners of India or to stay very local if so desired.

All the core members of these two teams have been associated with and collaborated on a large number of projects for over 15 years.     Prevention of malpractice during the free aptitude test is of utmost importance for the relevance of our Ranking system. This test is administered through the PlacementBee Examination App. The security features of our examination system are listed below:

    Question Authoring is a continuous process and we have a dedicated team of retired professors/academicians engaged in development of new questions. Each question is peer reviewed by another team member of the same discipline. Each question paper is designed so that a candidate’s problem-solving ability, consistency, prioritization, numerical and verbal ability are tested and measured.

    The term evaluation is a bit misleading because what we present, which is the requirement in modern recruitment, is a comprehensive comparison of each candidate. The strengths and drawbacks of a candidate logically divided and is quantitively evaluated for this comparison.

    The Ranking system is a reflection of this comparison that we provide. It is entirely possible that a candidate with a rank of 120 is better suited to a position than one with a rank of 105. That is a judgement we leave to you because you are the best judge of suitability of an employee in your organization. However, a candidate with a rank of 105 is definitely better in most areas than someone with a rank of 1050. The ranking system is to be used more as a guideline than a concrete reflection of a candidate’s ability.

  • There are two types of customized services that are offered by PlacementBee. The first service is the additional screening of candidates. Having a proper recruitment structure with the right personnel is an expensive proposition and out of reach for most companies. Most interviews are done by job-role seniors and personnel in the organization who are not trained in this activity. This screening service is aimed to help companies identify the most suitable candidates for the vacant position/s without the hassles of designing an appropriate selection process.

    The additional screening of candidates includes both subject-knowledge test and panel interview. The subject-knowledge tests are specifically designed according to post for which the selection is being done. We will provide a detailed result for this test – indicating the areas of strength and weaknesses for each candidate and a comprehensive comparison between all candidates shortlisted for this stage of selection. The panel interview will be taken by industry experts. We will provide the assessment sheets, the interviewer notes and complete video recording of the interview if this service is availed.

    The second service that we offer is data mining and data gathering services for recruitments which have some very specific set criteria/criterion for eligibility. We have tried to gather the data which are generally necessary for any recruitment but we have encountered some recruitment drives which requires certain specific information about eligibility. This service is aimed to help companies with unique needs for sourcing.

  • A short video where the candidate effectively answers the question “Tell us about yourself.” The question being addressed is generally among the first few interactions between the interviewer and the interviewee and often sets the pattern for the interview. The answer to this question “Tell us about yourself.” is always a prepared speech and we have given the candidates the option to prepare, review, change and then present the best version of themselves in this self intro video. This provides a much more effective means of judgement- for both objective and subjective views of the candidate – than asking the same question at real-time, during interviews. Interview time is better utilized for a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, grasp, and the perspective of the candidate.

  • The college education which is imparted under our education system is not aligned with the industry where that specialization is necessary. There is a considerable gap between the expectations during the job and the course being taught in the colleges. For a fresh candidate with no experience, an aptitude test is a necessary screening criterion. A candidate with higher aptitude will adapt and learn faster in a suitable job environment.

    All aptitude tests are customized. For example, the aptitude test for an electrical engineer will be more focused on visual reasoning, logical and critical reasoning while one for a management graduate will have higher weightage for Abstract Reasoning, Decision Making and Judgement tests.     PlacementBee is a unique platform which offers campus placement opportunities to all students in India. If you are a final year student or fresh out of college and looking for a break in the job market, PlacementBee is the platform for you. Once you complete your profile, upload your self-introduction video and appear in the aptitude test, your performance and skills will be visible to 1000s of recruiters across the globe. The platform is completely meritocratic where demand and skills drive recruitment. This platform lets you advertise your skills, qualifications and your uniqueness to employers around the world.

  • We conduct the free aptitude test periodically, at major cities in all states across India, for candidates who have completed their college education but are still seeking their first job. If you have completed your degree within the last 2 years, please register on our platform and when we conduct the aptitude test in your state, we will let you know. This test will be held at multiple locations in the state and you may opt for the location closest to you. The subsequent process for selection is the same for all candidates.

  • Currently PlacementBee service is only for freshers. We will be launching our service for experienced candidates by December 2024. We hope that you get a rewarding job by that time. Best wishes!

  • 1. How do I register our college on the PlacementBee platform?

    We, at PlacementBee, are in the process of contacting each and every college in India for partnering with us and allowing their students the opportunity to appear for the free aptitude test. There are over 40,000 colleges in India and it is possible that we have not reached out to your college as yet.

    Please write to us at contact@placementbee.com with the name and address of your institution along with the contact person name, designation, mobile number and email id and we will take immediate steps to start the registration of your students.

  • The colleges have two important parts to play in this process – neither of which are resource or cost intensive. The process will commence when an institution agrees to a one-hour time slot for conduct of the aptitude test for their students. Once the date and time of the test is fixed, the candidates can immediately begin registration. At this juncture, the colleges/institutions have the responsibility to ensure that the maximum number of their final year students register for this opportunity.

    On the day of the aptitude test, typically a working day, the college will provide adequate infrastructure for smooth conduct of this test. The college authorities shall also cooperate with the independent Observer deployed for vigilance during the test.

  • PlacementBee does not charge any money from the colleges or the candidates. We firmly believe that neither the colleges should pay any money for campus placements nor the candidates for showcasing their skills and knowledge.

  • - Unquestionably. You have the greatest involvement in the success of your students. We are a medium for the talent to reach the right place but this talent has been nurtured by you.

    Colleges have the complete right to advertise the success stories of their students, we humbly request you to add a line about our efforts in the story – completely at your discretion.

  • Though we shall do our best to reach out to maximum number of companies across the globe, there will be a certain number of candidates who will be unable to get placements through our platform. We have a team of experienced reviewers who will give an assessment of the candidate’s performance indicating areas that require improvement. This assessment will be based on the information gathered during examination, from the self-intro video, recruiter interest and comparison with similar candidates across India.

    The reason why a candidate did not get campus placement and why a candidate did, is a very case specific study. Our software can broadly tell us the properties which are common to most successful candidates and conformity or deviance from the average for a particular candidate. Though a powerful indicator, which will get more powerful as we gather historical data, this output from our software is inadequate for judgement as to the reasons why a candidate did not achieve success. Individual support remains a challenge in a country like India due to the sheer number of candidates but this is something we are working on constantly. Our present endeavor is to attract the maximum number of recruiters to our platform so that the chances of each student getting placed increases.
